SUNA NO ONNA
   An existential novel written by Abe Kobo, Suna no onna (1962; tr. The Woman in the Dunes, 1964) is the story of an entomologist named Junpei who becomes stranded during a research trip to a coastal sand dunes region. After accepting the hospitality of locals, who have him stay with a widow required to dig sand to prevent the dunes from overtaking the village, he finds himself trapped, forced to work with the widow. Digging sand endlessly, they fall in love and eventually he chooses to willfully remain in the village. Abe wrote the screenplay for an award-winning film adaptation of this novel in 1964.
